No need to panic!!

Apple PieDelighted to say that the reception to our newly launched apple pies has been fantastic with the family size (520g) quickly out of stock, and just a dozen of the regular size (300+grams) left. No need to panic however as we had another apple pie bake yesterday!

A couple of you have told us that your Mum used to sprinkle a little extra cinnamon on top of the pie apple pie filling before sealing and we listened to you and tried it out – and, yes, it is even tastier – we did this yesterday and will be doing so into the future. Thank you 🙂

The apple pie has been confirmed by many as just great eaten hot – and with vanilla ice cream – though several of you have reported them going well with custard too! Trust us, they are delicious eaten at room temperature as well.

As you will see from our updated price list, we have priced the regular size (enough for 2) at a very attractive 37,500 rupiah and the family size (520grams plus) at a bargain 55,000 rupiah.

cherriesPleased to tell you also that “Santi’s Cherry Pie” has passed through exhaustive user testing with flying colours. These are absolute taste bombs and should be available in the week commencing 16th March subject to satisfactory resolution of pricing with our potential cherry supplier.

As far as we are aware there is NO cherry production in Indonesia itself and consequently anything actually available is imported with predictably high pricing. Hopefully buying in 25kg lots will help some.

After Cherry will come Blueberry as we have identified a source for them. In case you ever wonder, we eat our avowed consumers of our own pies and love introducing new ones as we get to try them out first 🙂

As you may remember, we put the Beef Pasties on the back burner while we get the fruit pies up to speed. This has not put off a number of you who had tasted them – and wanted them even if not of the consistent shape we continue to work on. Thank you for your faith!

Our mainstream meat pie products, with the recent Aussie Meat Pie and Guinness additions, continue to be very well received and, in order to get more of you familiar with our Fruit Pie products, we are delighted to extend our special offer of a free regular “Santi’s Apple Pie” with every order for 6 or more of our regular pies – and two for every order of 12 or more.

When you are in a hole …..

dig-holeReceived wisdom has it that, when you are in a hole, it’s best to stop digging. So it is that, despite rave reviews for the taste of both our newly developed pasties, our now prolonged inability to make even two of them look the same has meant we have stopped digging for now. We’ll be back.

Apple PieIn stark contrast, and in response to many customer requests, the kitchen lab has taken up its next project, fruit pies, with almost immediate success and “Santi’s Apple Pie” has been extremely well received by both our in-house “taster” and a small number of our customers.

Santi’s Apple Pie has US influences, is wonderfully juicy and has both cinnamon and nutmeg adding quite delicious taste to the top quality apples used.

Our bean counter has yet to work out the costings and arrive at a price but before that is done we are anxious to get our Apple Pie onto the plates of as many of our customers as possible. To this end we are adding a free-of-charge standard Apple Pie (300 grams) to every order this week for 6 or more of our regular pies and the family size Apple Pie (520 grams) to orders of 12 or more.

We do believe you will LOVE Santi’s Apple Pies – and anxiously await your feedback.

Wonderful to meet !!

girlsMany thanks to all who, despite the appalling weather and traffic conditions during the day, came to our official new product launch last evening, it really was a lot of fun to see you all in one place, the cozy and welcoming surroundings of Murphy’s Irish Pub in Kemang

For me it was wonderful to meet so many of our existing customers, some for the first time, and of course quite a few new customers. Everyone I spoke to loved the new products and indeed the firmer base crust update on the existing range. Clearly winners!

We also took the opportunity to introduce our brand new Beef Pastie and, if anything, that was to be the hit of the evening, with many anxious to make an order there and then! In fact the 20 we brought with us were the entire first mini production batch so it is going to be next week before we are able to offer them for delivery – and you might expect the Chicken Pastie the week after 🙂

Many thanks to Killian, Harry and all the staff at Murphy’s who, on a busy serving evening, made such a great job of preparing those pies the way they should be, in the oven, and getting them with all the trimmings onto the plates of all those there.

We took 140 pies and 20 pasties there and none went home (to our home at least), so well done to you all!!

New products and updates – all at Murphy’s Kemang!!!

We have been working hard since Xmas developing our new products and updates – and our new  packaging and we hope that we have a lot to show for it – or rather our customers.

Steak and Guinness Pie, with and without Cheese – and our take on the Aussie Meat Pie, straight and with a cheese topping are the new ones – and every other pie in our range updated with a new, firmer, base crust.

Some of you have already been trying the new range and we are pleased to say that feedback we have received has been great so far 🙂

We believe you will also find the faultless vacuum packaging we are now achieving with our new Taiwanese technology packer an absolute delight and perfect for keeping your pies in great condition for as long as six months in your freezer!

Murphy's LogoTo make sure you all get a chance to sample all our new stuff we are holding our official launch event at the well-known and much-loved Murphy’s bar in Kemang on the evening of Tuesday 10th February starting at 7:30pm – and taking orders until 9:30 when you will, with our compliments, be able to try out our pies with the accompaniments that set them off best, mashed/fried potatoes, veggies and delicious gravies.

To add to the fun, Murphy’s are keeping their prices at Happy Hour pricing for the duration  … thanks guys 🙂

An exciting 3 weeks

All, it has been an exciting 3 weeks for us since last we updated our blog

The reaction to our Hot to Trot Trio special offer has been amazing with many new customers joining us and, more importantly, being delighted with the Beef Curry, Beef Rendang and Chicken Curry offering that we put together, with two of them even sending us photos with accompanying messages telling us just how much they enjoyed them 🙂

While expatriates continue to be our core demographic, the Rendang pie in particular, while modified a little for Western tastes, has grown a significant following with the Indonesian community as well – and that makes us very proud!!

master logo Tee Set - 200 x 165Since the very start of our business we have had great support from arguably Jakarta’s premier Golf Society, Tee Set, and its hungry members.

We are delighted therefore to announce that we will be joining the sponsors of Tee Set’s major event of the year, the Tee Set Championship, to be held at Matoa Golf Club on the 30th November.

If you are a golfer and love pies then you will be happy to learn that we will be serving up our full range of pies at the Championship, both on the course and at the dinner afterwards. A great event with a quality Tee Set shirt and socks, goodie bag, prizes, door prizes, great food and enough liquid refreshment to float a ship as well as a round of golf!! – all for just 1 million rupiah. If you would like to join in the fun but are not yet signed up then you can still do that here as they still have about 20 playing slots open. We are regularly encouraged by our customers to introduce new pies and indeed our existing pies in new formats – and we respond, though not always as quickly as you would hope as we are constrained by our resource availability (code for I am very busy) as well as freezer space!

InflationTo add to the Hot to Trot Trio mentioned above and introduced over the last few months, we can now offer ALL our pie range in mini, midi and mega sizes to special order – as you can see from the full line up and pricing of our products with effect from 1st November, pricing affected by the seeming inexorable rise in the price of our major ingredients driven not least by the decline in the value of the rupiah.

We hate raising prices but take some consolation in that, pie for pie, we are still cheaper than our only significant competitor in Jakarta and this despite our pies being an average of 50% bigger at 265g plus – and of course 100% tastier:-)

Something old, something new …

Three weeks since our last regular news post here, not least because of being very busy keeping those pies coming so, first up, some news of interest on our product line-up.

Healthily increasing sales have finally encouraged us to acquire further freezer space, something which allows us to widen our product range by bringing back chunky steak versions of both the Steak Pie and the Steak and Kidney pie – and one totally new product.

Really glad to be able to brink the chunky steak versions back; while they have been “off menu” for 3 months we have continued to make them to special order for a number of customers who love them – and some of our recent customers have added to that demand.

Rendang

Expats who have been here for some time have almost certainly come across one of Indonesia’s most famous dishes, Rendang, and the extra freezer space we have available finally allows me to offer you my long-planned Beef Rendang Pie!

I have of course added a few of my own touches to the pie to make it more attractive to the western palate without damaging its appeal to an Indonesian audience. Smaller bite sizes of meat therefore, and meat moreover that has been rather more tenderised than is the tradition – and just a tad off the usual spiciness.

We are confident that the new pie will quickly develop a following and, to encourage you to try it, we will be adding a free of charge sample to all orders for delivery next week. No need to add it to your order, we will automatically do that for you.

Finally, and as your doubtless know, one of our biggest issues since we started has been delivery.

A small business trying to get their product into the hands of customers across a city the size of Jakarta has certainly been a challenge – especially as everyone, including us, hates delivery charges.

The situation on delivery is fluid and ever-changing, however, by concentrating on the central and southern areas favoured by expatriates, and delivering on the same day to area groups every week, we are managing to get by and meet the needs of most of our customers.

For deliveries outside the most favoured expatriate areas we will do the best we can and the larger the order the better in encouraging us to provide a decent delivery cost. We are also discussing same-day delivery of our products to those areas with a local courier service and first indications are positive. Watch this space.

The fastest way to get pies from our freezers to your plate is of course to pick-up from our place in Lebak Bulus – remember that drivers here spend 90% of their “working hours” sitting on their bottoms, so please don’t neglect it as an option!!

We have a new “baby”!!

We had always believed that our pies were a pretty generous serving, coming in at a guaranteed minimum weight of 265 grams – but between 280 and 290 grams in reality.

We were therefore rather surprised to receive a special order for bigger pies, pies which with the sample containers provided to us came in at a monster 480 grams and, if we are not mistaken, that’s a tad more than a pound in weight for these big boys if you still think in old money!

Monsters

The Monsters we cooked were Chicken and Mushroom pies, but we will do them for any of our regular pie fillings by special order, though with a minimum order quantity of 6 per filling type. Prices range from 48,000 for the Potato and Broccoli pie up to 65,000 for our Curry Pies.

If you are a big eater then you might consider the, erm, large size option, same great taste just, erm, larger!!

1,000 pies and running!!

1000 Pies and runningA small milestone for Santi’s Premium Pies this morning as the 1,000th pie came out of the oven accompanied by 35 eager team mates.

Perhaps no coincidence the 1,000th was a Steak Pie, our #1 best seller since inception; it will however have to look to its laurels as the newly available Curry Pie is making up ground quickly!

Many thanks to our loyal customer base for making this possible and, now, on to 2,000 🙂

Product line rationalisation

During her well deserved (she tells us!) holiday Santi was thinking about how to rationalise the product line while recognising that even the slow sellers have their devoted fans.

The driving force is of course that we don’t want to keep pies sitting in our freezers for too long and also don’t want to be baking small batches in order to meet that low demand as that is really very time-consuming and inefficient.

In future therefore, and in an effort get more efficient while continuing to meet customer needs we will, while dropping the Potato Pie and the Steak Pie – chunky steak from the line up, continue to make one-off batches of either, given a minimum of three days notice and a minimum order of 6 pies.

On the other hand we are of course keen to establish new  products that are popular with our customers and currently in the works are a Cherry Pie and a Chicken Pattie – watch this space!!

Chicken Pattie

Back in business!!

Pleased to report that the proprietor is safely returned from her 3 week review of the Turkish pie scene and spent last evening preparing the filling for today’s bake. In the absence of any assistance (missing in the kampung for another week of course) the range immediately on offer (from tomorrow) is restricted to Steak Pie – Minced and her new creation, the Curry Pie – a pie which has just passed the rigorous tests imposed by her experienced but unpaid QC manager.

The full range of pies will only be available from the middle of next week though of course you can order now for delivery then – or you can just order Steak Pie – Minced and/or Curry Pie for now!

Order here or just reply to this e-mail with the usual details. We can deliver free of charge in Blok M/Kemang on Friday evening – and of course at Tee Set @ Halim II on Sunday.

You may (or perhaps not) have noticed that the price of meat has gone through the roof recently in Rupiah terms and we have had no alternative to increasing the price of all our meat based pies to 37,500 Rupiah from 35,000. Chicken and Mushroom remains the same bargain 30,000 Rupiah as the price of chicken, while somewhat elevated right now, can be expected to return to pre-Ramadan levels pretty quickly.

For those with income in $/pounds/euros the continuing devaluation of the Rupiah against those currencies means that the price in the terms in which you think is reducing of course 🙂

PS Turkish meat pies were a big disappointment with too many “too’s”, too much puff pastry, too little meat, too dry and too expensive, though the fruit pies, especially the apple, were very nice indeed and we are of course still planning to offer a fruit pie or two in the not too distant future.
